Can I cook on an induction stove without a magnetic pot?

Question

Can I cook on an induction stove without a magnetic pot?

Answer

Yes, but it's not advisable. There are some materials that will support inductive heat such as aluminium that would work but are inefficient and have a low melting point. This means you run the risk of melting the metal which is not something you want to be in the business of doing.

That said, many induction stoves include a feature that will prevent them from working if they don't detect a ferromagnetic pan of an appropriate size for the stove.
